History of Artifacts

The majority of Assyrian reliefs located in the U.S. are from the Northwest Palace of King Ashurnasirpal II, the Assyrian king from 883 to 859 BC. Skilled artisans employed techniques such as bas-relief to carve intricate scenes into stone, showcasing a remarkable sense of depth and perspective.These artifacts vividly depict the cultural, political, and religious aspects of the Assyrian Empire.

Reliefs & Locations

The palace, located in Nimrud, had walls that were adorned with approximately 600 of these reliefs in total. Approximately 400 of these reliefs were moved to western museums- 20+ of which are located in the U.S and available to be seen.
